Vienna’s Canal Grande – The Donaukanal and its attractions
The Danube Canal, which was years ago also called Viennese Water (Wiener Wasser), became revitalised and developed in the last few years to a new hot spot. After years of negligence new opened beach bars, clubs and cafés illuminated the area.
The surroundings along the Danube Canal provide different kinds of leisure centres and party locations, but also landing places of the Danube shipping, like Twin City Liner or Vienna Roundtrips.
The Strandbar Herrmann, near to the Urania, was the first location, which started into the new season this year. With filled up sandy beach, deck chairs and delicious cocktails and food it establishes as a famous beach bar.
The summerstage, situated near the metro station Rossauer Lände, opened at the end of April. With concerts, exhibitions, different events and its beautiful terrace it entices many visitors.
The Adria Vienna, near the Salztorbridge, gleams in new brightness with its new built glass house. With the Mediterranean kitchen it is an essential part in the revival of the Danube Canal.
Also the Tel Aviv Beach is conducive to the reassessment of this gorgeous area. A beach in the middle of the city invites to relax in the sun and listen to national or international DJ-Acts. Opposite to the Tel Aviv Beach is the Flex located, one of Vienna’s most famous clubs.
Not to forget the Badeschiff and its pool! Between Schwedenplatz and Urania you will find this unique ship. It attracts not only with its blue swim-oasis, but also with cocktails, deck chairs on the sun deck, and many exceptional parties. Also the physical well-being is provided, due to the new fish market, which opened recently.
New on the Danube Canal is also the renovated and re-opened Otto Wagner Schützenhaus near the Schottenring. In this land marked building the old tradition is combined with a modern touch and you can try traditional Viennese food from the Monarchy.
An annually famous and important event forms the Donaukanaltreiben, taking place every year in June. Between Spittelau and Franzensbridge the visitors can experience concerts, cabarets and readings live along the Canal. This year it will take place from June 3rd until 5th and live acts are for example Violetta Parisini, A Life A Song A Cigarette or Tanz Baby!
The Danube metropolis is planning some new projects, like developing the green areas and leisure centres with hammocks, or more possibilities for sporty people.
